Week 5: Evaluating My GAME Plan Progress

So far, my actions have been pretty effective. Because I work two jobs and I am working on my masters, things are moving a little slow. However, striking up conversations and asking around helps you to learn a lot. For example, sampling starting a conversation about technology at a department meeting is an easy and effective way to see who is knowledgeable and who is not; which of my co-workers would be willing to learn with me and which ones are a little more stuck in their ways. This is one step toward meeting my goals… finding out who I can turn to for help and support.

So far, I have learned that we have a resource called Moodle (anyone ever heard of it?) that will allow me to create a class webpage of sorts and share information with my students and parents. However, that is about the extent of my knowledge so far. I have not had a chance to play around with it yet. Does anyone use Moodle? If so, do you have any advice or suggestions? Also, one of my concerns is that most of my students do not have internet or even computer access at home; therefore, I don’t know how effective of a way this would be for communicating and sharing information.

I still have a great deal to learn and in all reality, will always have something to learn. Since technology is constantly changing and evolving, I will never be at the point where I am satisfied. Therefore, I’m not entirely sure my plan will every fully be mastered. Maybe one adjustment I need to make is that there is no end time or fulfillment status… maybe my plan should be a continuous one throughout my career that is just adjusted and evolves with technology and my knowledge.

  1. Melissa, I too still have a great deal to learn about technology. It is constantly changing so I think learning and utilizing these digital tools will be a career long journey. I think your GAME plan should be a continuous one in your career because there is no way you can learn all the constantly evolving digital tools without driving yourself insane, especially while working two jobs and finishing your Master's.

  2. Moodle is a great LMS Learning Management Service that allows you to create online courses or resources. Here are a couple of resources that might help you with Moodle.

  3. The idea of your GAME plan being never-ending is very encouraging, because I was feeling the same way about the completion of my GAME plan. As busy as most teachers are with additional work responsibilities/duties and families, the process of mastering rapidly moving technological concepts is not realistic.
    Good luck to you.

  4. As I read, I find that time is a factor in most case scenarios. This is also the case with me. I know that many of us are working, have children and it’s the holiday season. Putting masters work on the table makes it that much more difficult at the end of the day! Persistence is a must in this type of atmosphere. But it is difficult when my three year old boy wants to horse around with his dad. He always takes precedence.

Moodle was introduced to the staff in my school, but did not take off too much. We have had a tremendous amount of technology tools thrown at us in the past few years that we tend to pick and choose as we go taking what would be most effective for classroom use. Sorry I can’t help there.

In my opinion, you are right on target with keeping your goals open-ended. Technology is forever changing, and quickly. As long as we are in the educational field, we will be assimilating to new technologies. This is the only path to explore if we wish to keep up with the students of the future.
